Eilish McColgan: How to stay motivated after injury
After a serious foot injury in 2011, Scottish middle-distance runner Eilish McColgan tell us how she maintained her motivation and went on to win gold in the Commonwealth Games 2022. Here, she shares her top post-injury training tips, how her Shokz headphones add rhythm to her runs and how she adjusts her post-injury mindset.
Injuries are inevitable for athletes. Have you ever had an injury that’s particularly memorable?
In 2011, I suffered a bad fracture in my foot. I underwent surgery, had my foot re-shaped and learned how to run again with a new running gait. I now have seven screws and a metal plate in my left foot.

Last year was challenging. How do you recover from an injury? How do you adjust your mindset to get back on the field?
I like to keep a journal and training diary. It's important to note down the progress you make each week. Sometimes it can be hard to see light at the end of the tunnel, but if you make a note of it, you can reflect back and be proud of how far you've come. All injuries are a chance to become better and stronger than before.
We see you sharing your encouraging training blogs and tips on social media. Does this enhance your sense of community?
I just love my sport. It doesn't matter if you're an Olympic athlete or starting to run for the first time. Everyone who puts on a pair of trainers is a runner and we all go through the same ups and downs! I find other people's running stories hugely inspirational.
You've encountered some unkind comments on the internet in the past. How did you adjust your attitude?
It's really sad that some individuals are so negative, but it's really a reflection on their own lives. If anything, I feel sorry for trolls. I'm glad to live the life I lead and not theirs!
We know you’ve recently partnered with Shokz. When did you start using Shokz products and how do they help with your training routine?
I’ve been using Shokz since 2019. Listening to music with Shokz headphones is a nice way to switch off on some of my easier days – and to add extra motivation when I’m tired. Music is a huge motivator for me. I feel safer running outside with the Shokz OpenRun Pro headphones as I can listen to music, whilst staying aware of what’s happening around me.
Why did you choose Shokz as your partner?
Shokz have produced some incredible products that allow runners to feel safe, as they’re still able to hear what’s going on in their surroundings whilst listening to music. They’re really comfortable to wear, too. I like everything the brand stands for.
How does music help your running?
I find music motivating. Especially on bad-weather days or when I’m tired. It's nice to find my rhythm with music.
What’s your favourite music?
I like listening to Kid Cudi, J Cole, Kanye, Raye, Frank Ocean.
We admire Eilish for her ability to turn setbacks into comebacks. With a few extra tricks under your running belt, we hope that you’ll find the motivation to keep going, too.
