James Kelly

James’s journey into HYROX began after discovering the sport online in 2021/22, when he was inspired by early athletes competing at a time when HYROX was still virtually unknown in Australia. Seeing its unique blend of endurance and functional fitness, he immediately felt it was a challenge suited to his strengths. In 2022, he travelled to Birmingham for his first race and made an unforgettable debut, winning the Pro division in 59:53 and becoming the first athlete to break the 60-minute barrier on debut—an early statement of his potential in the sport.

Since then, James has steadily established himself at the elite level of HYROX, consistently competing in Elite 15 fields, qualifying for multiple World Championships, and securing major victories across the 2024/25 season, including wins in Hong Kong and Glasgow. He has also placed 3rd and 4th at the HYROX World Championships, along with strong performances in Phoenix and Melbourne Elite 15 Doubles, reflecting his ability to perform consistently across both individual and team formats. A major turning point in his career came when he began working with coach Anthony, introducing structured, unbiased training that helped unlock a new level of performance and consistency.

Driven by a relentless focus on self-improvement, James thrives on the discipline of daily training and the pursuit of marginal gains across all areas of fitness. Outside of competition, he is known for his cheeky, emotional personality and his passion for simple joys like rollerblading and spending time with his girlfriend, balancing the intensity of elite sport with a grounded personal life. In training, James relies on Shokz as a genuine performance partner, with the OpenFit Pro becoming his go-to for running sessions, long HYROX workouts, and everyday use. Its comfort, lightweight feel, and situational awareness allow him to stay mentally engaged while training, making it an essential part of both his preparation and recovery routine.
